Background:
The Coalition to Save Harlem will be hosting its second Harlem Youth Gathering on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The theme of the event this year is “Youth Inspiring Youth”. The theme and program for the event was developed with the input of community youth. The event will focus on youth between the ages of 15–22 years old and is a youth centered informational and educational event.
Because a major goal of the event is to make it as youth centered as possible, there will be opportunities for youth to share their experiences and organizational literature with those youth who are searching for ways to also perform positive actions in the community that lead to a better education, a sense of social responsibility and the development of effective leadership skills.
The day's program will open with libations to demonstrate honor and respect to the Ancestors. Resources and a mini Job Fair will be provided. Also, the program will include interactive discussion groups resulting in report backs. The youth will be encouraged to use their creativity to make “report backs” of what they discussed. For example, youth may determine in their discussion group to “report back” in the form of spoken word, a Hip Hop presentation, a short skit/role playing or other “report back” format of their choosing.
Discussion groups will focus on issues affecting the youth today such as youth organizing around the lost of student MetroCards and school closings, youth organizing around gentrification and other community issues, conflict resolution and information about their Rights (when stopped by the police, obtaining information of school records, etc.).
